How It Works
All of this talk about energy flow and Qi sounds esoteric and may seem like it takes a degree of faith in order to be effective. Taking a few steps back, we have to keep in mind that the ancient Chinese did not have MRIʼs, X-rays, complex diagnostic equipment, or even something as “simple” as a microscope to investigate the very real results that they saw through observation and clinical experience. They simply saw that certain things worked and they needed a way to pass on the information to subsequent generations. They therefore came up with theories (the theory of energy flow being just one of them) to explain their observations.
These theories are very esoteric and were often in the form of poetry and beautiful flowing language to make them easier to remember and pass down from generation to generation. Now that we have complex diagnostic equipment, a great deal of research is being done to find out exactly how acupuncture works. Brain scans have shown intricate connections between acupuncture points and various areas of the brain affecting things from hormone and endorphin production to immune response.
The amazing thing is that these areas of the brain light up upon stimulation of acupuncture points even when the nerve connections have been severed!
Equally amazing is that the ancient Chinese were able to come up with these elaborate theories that have stood up over thousands of years, without any of the technology that we have today. How does it work? I donʼt know if anyone really knows, but the clinically proven fact is that it does work.
As far as faith goes, acupuncture has been proven to be effective in the treatment of animals and infants, and they don't know that they are "supposed" to get better.
